In this sense, the vice president has conveyed to both the CEOE and the CCOO and UGT the need to agree on a powerful salary increase for the coming years, within the framework of the Agreement for Employment and Collective Bargaining (AENC), which serves as a reference to negotiating teams within companies on key issues such as setting salaries, as well as other working conditions.

This same Tuesday, after the meeting of the Council of Ministers that approved the increase in the interprofessional minimum wage (SMI) to 1,000 euros, the vice president made a public call in this regard and demanded that unions and employers show their "commitment" and achieve " a country pact" to row together, with the Government, in the same direction, improving salaries to improve the economy as a whole. "We must reverse precariousness and low salaries," he concluded.

Behind closed doors, social dialogue sources reveal that the Minister of Labor and her team have also transferred that pressure to the bipartite table, since the Ministry does not intervene in the AENC negotiation.

It must be remembered that the last AENC ended its validity in 2020 and, despite union insistence, it has not been renewed because employers have refused to negotiate it in the middle of the pandemic. In fact, the CEOE has also rejected the last two increases in the SMI that the Ministry has agreed only with the unions. However, in the same statement that showed their refusal to the last increase in the minimum wage to 1,000 euros, the employers expressed their willingness to "analyze and specify in the bipartite sphere with the unions what should be the path to update reasonable salaries." for the coming years within the framework of the negotiations of the next Interconfederal Agreement for Collective Bargaining (AENC), which offers peace of mind to companies and workers and, in general, to the country.

Preliminary contacts, in fact, have already taken place. This is confirmed by social dialogue sources who advance that the pure and simple negotiation will start at the beginning of March. The moment is delicate, because the escalation of inflation is proving to be more persistent than analysts initially projected and is greatly straining the purchasing power of workers, but from the business side they insist that the situation is temporary and must be avoided. The rise in prices permeates payrolls across the board and the feared second round effects end up occurring. The unions, for their part, defend that workers must be protected from the escalation of the CPI to guarantee their purchasing power and avoid an increase in labor conflict.

The President of the Government himself, Pedro Sánchez, has entered the debate and has asked economic agents to prevent the rise in the CPI from "ending up permeating the rest of the economy", guaranteeing that one of the factors of this increase in inflation, the cost of energy, will register a "significant reduction" in the middle of the year. The economic vice president, Nadia Calviño, has spoken along the same lines, warning that it is advisable to avoid wage increases that turn inflation into structural ones. The Bank of Spain has also warned of this possible vicious circle, but Yolanda Díaz is not in that mood and has recently responded to the supervisor that, in the face of the "voices that always ask to moderate salaries", the "CPI problem is not due to to salaries or pensions.

The truth is that the sharp rise in inflation has already been felt in salary negotiations. The records of collective agreements from last January show that the average salary increase was 2%, which represents an unusual increase of half a point in a single month. The reason is none other than the impact of salary updates after the CPI increased by 6.5% year-on-year in December and advanced by 3.1% on average in 2021. The price rally intensified in the final stretch of the year and many Of the workers who then negotiated their working conditions, they included wage guarantee clauses in their agreements, which compensate for all or part of the increase in the CPI to avoid losses of purchasing power.

The CPI fell by 0.4% in January, which has cut the inflation rate by four tenths, to 6.1%, a result higher than expected by Funcas, which has just revised upwards its projections for this year. Specifically, experts consider that the inflation rate will rise again in February to 7.1%, and on an annual average it will be 4.6% (compared to 3.7% in the previous forecast). And with this scenario, employers and unions will sit down to negotiate a new AENC in the coming days. The unions are already putting salary increases of up to 5% on the table and employers, for the moment, prefer not to talk about numbers, according to employers' sources who insist that the priority at this time is for companies to recover from the crisis. serious crisis that they are still going through.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

The Vice President is asking business and trade union organisations to reach a “national pact” within the framework of the Agreement for Employment and Collective Bargaining (AENC).
